Managing Low Mood

A course for depression based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Behavioural Activation techniques.

Cognitive behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Behavioural Activation (BA) have been shown by research to be one of the most effective treatments for depression symptoms. CBT looks at how thoughts and behaviour influence our feelings. The course aims to help you develop strategies to manage your symptoms of low mood and consists of 6 sessions, meeting at the same day, time and venue each week:

Topics covered in the course include:

  • Introduction to CBT and Behavioural Activation

  • Improving routine for sleep and appetite

  • Improving motivation and activity levels

  • Rumination and avoidance patterns

  • Relapse prevention and moving forward

The course is not designed to offer one-to-one support, the idea is you use the parts of the sessions that are helpful for you and work on the skills delivered in between the sessions. The more you practice the techniques in between sessions, the more you should get out of treatment. We also ask you to complete questionnaires each week to monitor how your symptoms are changing and to make sure you get the most out of treatment. If at any time in the group, you feel you need one-to-one support or you feel you may be at risk to yourself, others or from others please see one of the course facilitators or speak to your practitioner.

After the course you will have the chance to have a one-to-one appointment to review your progress.
